This is my first post in the New Year. I was slacking off here but I had other things to tend to, namely my education. That brings me to the topic for today. I came across this new show on ABC called “Work It.” At first I thought it was just going to be another show with a man acting silly and odd while dressed as a woman. I was wrong. IT IS WORSE. This show decided they thought it would be funny to make awful derogatory and offensive jokes at the expense of women and Latinos, specifically victims of rape and Puerto Ricans. I had no intention of seeing the fake reboot of “Bosom Buddies” mixed with “Tootsie.” I saw a friend on Facebook describing a protest in time square near ABC studios and I thought it might have to do with this new show. I looked up the show and saw it has been getting VERY POOR reviews. Good!! I’m glad they are getting such terrible reviews. The “humor” they decided to write and produce is atrocious. The first offensive joke that had me shaking my head in disgust was when the wife on the show told her husband to stop comparing a prostate exam to the pinball machine scene in the film “The Accused.” That film was about a woman being gang raped on a pinball machine in a bar. I could not believe that writers and producers thought that was funny. The second joke that had me sick to my stomach in 2012 was when the main character tells his Latino friend. Angel, about his new job as a pharmaceutical rep and Angel proceeds to say. “I’m Puerto Rican, I can sell drugs.” WHAT!?!?!?!?!?! I could not believe it. Oh did I mention that Angel speaks with an accent. Not necessary and insulting. This show needs to be taken off the air ASAP and ABC should be ashamed of themselves. I think the actors should also be ashamed of themselves. I am disturbed by this. I am going to blog about this, tweet about this and post on Facebook and anyplace else I can find that is willing to listen. Our society has to stop thinking it’s funny to disrespect and stereotype people, all for a laugh. It’s not worth it. Let’s get creative people.
Stay Tuned.
